Effects of Gravitational Stress on Immune Response in Mice

Abstract

A number of studies have suggested that gravity changes may influence immune functions. We wished to evaluate its effect on immunity by analyzing the change in blastogenic activity to concanavalin A (Con A) as well a
s the change in the number of
CD4+
CD8+T cells in mice. Experimental groups of mice were subjected to a gravitational stress of +15Gz for 4-sex/time (2 times/day) for up to 14days. Con A-induced proliferation assay and T cell subsets analysis of thymic and splenic lymphocytes were
performed 24hr after last stress exposure. Short-term exposure to the gravitational stress clearly enhanced the Con A activated T cell proliferation, while depression occurred with loger exposure. CD+4 CD8+ T cell percentages were in the range of
normal
values after gravitational stress. More interestingly, when data are expressed as the ratio between CD4+ and CD8+cells, no consistent abnormalities in the relative proportions of the T cell subsets were noted. These observations would seem to
indicate
that gravitational stress not only can enhance immune responsiveness, but can also depress in accordance with duration of stress.
